    Overview

This 2-day safari itinerary covers two of Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife destinations: Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. Designed for travelers with limited time, this compact adventure offers a thrilling opportunity to witness diverse ecosystems, large elephant herds, and the Big Five in a short period. The itinerary starts and ends in Arusha, using a 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for optimal game viewing.

    Tour Plan

Day 1: Journey to Tarangire National Park
The safari begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha at around 8:00 AM. After a brief introduction from your experienced English-speaking guide, you embark on a 2-hour drive to Tarangire National Park, passing vibrant Maasai villages and open plains. Upon arrival, registration is completed at the park gate, and a full-day game drive commences. Tarangire, spanning 2,850 square miles, is renowned for its massive baobab trees and the largest elephant herds in Tanzania. The Tarangire River, the park’s lifeline during the dry season (July to December), attracts wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, and antelopes, with predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas often nearby. A picnic lunch is enjoyed at a scenic spot overlooking the river, though you’ll need to watch for cheeky monkeys eyeing your meal. The game drive continues until late afternoon, offering chances to spot rare species like the Greater Kudu or Fringe-Eared Oryx. As the sun sets, you exit the park and drive to a budget-friendly lodge or campsite in Mto wa Mbu or Karatu, such as Haven Nature Camp or Ngorongoro Campsite, for dinner and overnight stay.
After an early breakfast at 6:30 AM, you depart for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a 1-hour drive from Mto wa Mbu or Karatu. By 8:00 AM, you descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest intact caldera. Home to over 25,000 animals, the crater offers exceptional game viewing, with a high chance of spotting the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino. The crater floor, supported by a permanent water supply, teems with wildebeest, zebras, hippos, and predators like cheetahs and spotted hyenas. Over 500 bird species, including flamingos and ostriches, add to the spectacle. A picnic lunch is served near the famous hippo pool, providing a unique dining experience. After a 5- to 6-hour game drive, you ascend the crater rim around 3:00 PM and begin the 2- to 3-hour drive back to Arusha, arriving by late afternoon. Optional add-ons, such as a Maasai village visit or Olduvai Gorge museum tour, can be included for an additional cost (approximately $25–$35 per person). The safari concludes with a drop-off at your hotel or the airport in Arusha.
